Blue Eyes...
~~~~~Peter F. Drucker
Between catching up on all the laundry and various household chores, I've been out visiting friends in the blog-o-sphere neighborhood. Stopped in at Pattie's (she's a square peg), delighted to visit for awhile listening to her favorite music. Pattie has a wonderful new pet dog that she adopted from the local animal shelter/pound. Laney is a Irish setter mix who is keeping her up and going even after she overextends herself in yard work. Please stop over and say hi.
It's been a weekend filled with many prayers. My friend; Susan, has suffered another heart attack. The woman is pushing me to just go up to the DC area and make sure that she takes care of herself. And to put a stop to all the stress that is creating the strain on the old heart muscles. Crazily, she put up a post on how to ignore heart attacks for us women. Oh no, tongue in cheek she wasn't. Unh huh... We'll see how she feels after I get up there.
Anyways, after listening to the songs on Pattie's playlist, I dropped in at YouTube. The song "Blue Eyes crying in the rain" by Willie Nelson and Shania Twain reminds me of the time I spent with my Daddy in his big rig. While Daddy didn't like to watch Willie on television, he could listen to him on the radio for hours on end.
So... this song is for my Daddy, whose blue eyes twinkled like no others I've seen.
Yes, listening to this does bring the tears to mine, but they're good tears. It also brings a flood of memories of the good times we've shared. Now, my blue eyes are smiling in the midst of it all.
And so it goes......
Missing Bike Week...
~~~~~Author Unknown
What the heck was I thinking? I've got vacation time. BH wanted me to stay at his place. Even got an invitation to fly. *Sigghh* But did I? Uhm, Noooooooo.
Seriously considering getting my head examined. It's not like I haven't been hit upside the head with a couple hundred clue-bats in the months past. I know, I've seen and marked things for further contemplation. You wouldn't believe the number of my friends who have told me so...
This I miss, more than I care to admit. Biker Bi**ch, I'm not. I do like riding behind BH, mainly because I know he won't take chances with me sitting in the Queens seat behind him.
Never has, even when I needed the head cleared of cobwebs.
I miss listening to the rumble of thousands of Harleys' starting up. Gosh, do they rumble...
I miss feeling the wind tugging my hair in every direction. Yeah, I know helmets should be worn...
I miss the crowds of people milling about, places where I can sit sipping an adult beverage and catch up on 'people watching'...
I miss seeing those friends who live in Daytona Beach year round...
But mostly, I miss the spectacle of it all...
If you've never been to Bike Week, let me tell ya... it's a lifetime experience you will never forget!
And so it goes......

Must See These 43...
~~~~~John F. Kennedy
This morning on my drive to the paycheck place for a few hours of safety training, I passed what looked to be a pretty severe 2-3 car accident. Brake lights were bright red as the drivers in front of me slowed down to gawk at the destruction in the south bound lanes. The blue lights of the local county and city police were flashing from all sides as they held back the oncoming traffic. Four ambulances were parked haphazardly across the lanes and intersection from whence the broken vehicles lay. The carnage of metal and plastic car parts were strewn along the concrete, as one of the vehicles involved (a small truck) could be seen in the ditch, two more vehicles had stopped sideways and backwards in the roadway. The engine lay bare on one small SUV for all the world to see. I prayed a small prayer as I crept past the accident, hoping against hope that no one was seriously injured. It didn't bode well though looking at the what was left laying in the road.
I guess it's true that we can't look away from such graphic scenes.
Which brings me to this collection of 43 photographs taken by various photojournalist who have captured the scenes of the war in Afghanistan. The opening picture will take you breath away. One of our Marines involved in the battle for Marjah granted permission for his picture to be used as he was being bandaged up by medics after being wounded by an IED. Several of the pictures had "caution"- graphic scene- click here to continue, preceding the actual photograph.
Yes, I was one who clicked to continue. Relentless, I wanted to see what the true life of our soldiers looked like. It wasn't pretty to say the least. But now I know what they endure and persevere through to protect and liberate the people of Afghanistan.
You can't say you haven't been warned if you click on the link above. Oh, and one other thing, have tissues close by. I'm just sayin'.
Year Of The Census...
~~~~~John Perry Barlow
Are you ready to be counted? And probed for information as to your life, what you do, how you play, even the number of televisions you own? Among many other private matters.
Well, get prepared...
2010 is the year the U.S. Census is being conducted. I find it disconcerting that there are so many more invasive questions being asked though. Did you know that Congress must approve each and every question before it can be asked of us? I didn't. Makes me wonder why they need so much information from me. Isn't it enough that they can take a good portion of our wages and spend it without any great amount of input from us, the wage earners?
A friend of mine sent me the link to this video. There are some questions being asked of the Census Bureau that go unanswered. Hmmm... turn about is fair play, yes?
I reckon some of us will find out the consequences of non-disclosure of those private matters the Census Bureau is so interested in. The way I figure it, when I file my tax form, they have all the information they need. Name, address, number of dependents, wages earned, amount of taxes paid, and even where I work. Why not just correlate that information and eliminate the cumbersome and time consuming task of doing a census. It works for me. Certainly would save a bunch of our tax money, doncha think?

Relationships~ Part 2...
~~~~~Charles Dickens
As promised, more snippets of personal wisdom/smartassery from the men and women who live their lives in front of the camera, and have become larger than life to some. Just not to me.
I've always kept the perspective that everyone has to put their pants on one leg at a time, just like me. Even those in positions of power. Simple maybe, but effective when talking to the people much higher up the ladder than I. Reading these, I'd say that even those in Hollywood realize we all are human with faults...
Men reach their sexual peak at eighteen. Women reach theirs at thirty-five. Do you get the feeling that God is playing a practical joke?
Route 605...
~~~~~Baltasar Gracian
Watch the video below to see how 'Our Guys' search out those IED's (improvised explosive devices) that are planted by the bad guys to kill and maim the unsuspecting. The video was shot by a National Geographic reporter riding along with the Marine Team in Helmand province. Can you imagine how long and arduous their days are?
Keep saying those prayers of protection for each and every one of 'Our Guys' who are deployed in this War Against Terror.
If you'd like to keep abreast of what our Marines are doing while in country, be sure to bookmark this official webpage of the USMC MEB (Marine Expeditionary Brigade). For most excellent independent reporting from within Afghanistan, be sure that you are reading Michael Yon.

Relationships~ Part 1...
~~~~~Victor Hugo
In keeping with the desire to laugh everyday, a email from a friend had me laughing loud and long this morning. Anyone who has had a relationship with the opposite sex know the issues they can bring into your life. I've had my fair share of them, that's for sure. I also know to have a successful relationship, you must have trust, truth and time, lots of time. Without those three little things from both sides of the party, uhm yeah... pretty much epic failure. Quite honestly, no one is exempt. Even those in the eye of the Hollywood media. We get to hear and see the almost daily failure of their relationships. But they persevere and move on to the next.
Read a few of their thoughts on how they view those... Relationships with the opposite sex.
I'll post Part 2 set when I finish with the making of a few cookies to ship to a ship. Oh, that ship has a name. It so happens to be the Mesa Verde. Filled with Marines and sailors. One of them being my nephew; LnCpl. Joshua Pierce.
Ohio River Valley...
Not so much fun having to be out driving in it. A.J. Foyt was not alowed to drive, Terry the turtle was given that privilege for the trek to and fro.the paycheck place. I had offers for pick up and delivery by several male co-workers. Uhm, sorry guys, think I prefer my own driving. Not that I don't appreciate the offers...I do. Daddy taught us girls well.
Many others decided not to chance driving in those slippery conditions. Finally a decision was made to shut the plant down as most counties had declared "snow emergencies". Trip home was uneventful until I tried backing into the garage. There wasn't enough clearance between the under carriage and the snow. But I got 'er inside.
Will see how it shapes up as more is predicted within the next few days. Fun times for sure.
Open Letter ~ The Families Also Serve...
Everyone knows how 'Our Guys' willingly answer the call to service. But there are those who stand in the shadows of those men and women in uniform that deserve recognition as well.
My dear friend, Brat, who pens the military support blog; Assoluta Tranquillita has a post up from one of those shadowy figures... a military wife.
The families also serve: A military spouse open letter
[...]To the American Public From a Military Spouse An Open Letter (to anyone who can help) Written by: A Military Spouse December 14, 2009
This is a open letter to the Commander in Chief, First Lady Michelle Obama, the leaders of our Armed Forces, and the American Public. If it moves you, contact your elected officials.
News stations count the casualties of the War on Terrorism; by using body counts. Those numbers represent the service members who have not come home breathing to their family members. What about those that came home breathing, but dead inside? Those who suffer daily from some form, or extreme of Depression, PTSD, TBI, or any other of a half dozen syndromes? What about the families left behind whose soldiers are not getting the medical and mental health treatment the government has promised?
Our leaders stand in front of the American public and talk about how much the war is costing, and how much help is available to our returning soldiers and their families. We throw billions upon billions of dollars to artificially hold up the banking system and the value of our dollar. Yet, we sit by and do nothing while our American families fall apart.
I am the spouse of an Active Duty Soldier; I have spent over half of my marriage away from my soldier. I watched as the United States began to bomb Iraq and my soldier walked onto a plane for parts unknown. I have dropped everything when my phone rang, and my life stood still for the 15 minutes allotted to call home after standing in line for five to six hours, during the initial invasion back in March of 2003.
I have stood by and watched as my Soldier went overseas on his second tour only a few weeks after having gone through hernia surgery and knee surgery in quick succession. He deployed before finishing his physical therapy, and the Army promised to let him finish in a war zone. In case your wondering; he was never given the chance to finish his physical therapy. [...]
There is so much more to this letter that everyone needs to read. Please click on that title link, finish reading, then do whatever your heart dictates. If there is one who isn't afraid to speak up, there are probably hundreds or thousands just like her who are. Can we lend our voices so that they will be heard? I certainly hope so. 'Our Guys' families are out there on the front lines as much as the ones who wear the uniform.
And so it goes......
Lessons From Afghanistan...
~~~~~Martin H. Fischer
A wise person once told me to always be willing to learn something new everyday. I've tried to keep the mind open enough to do that and still keep what I already know to be true from falling out. A difficult task on some days...
Growing up with a father who was a professional (yes, there is a difference) truck driver created within me a deep love for the wanderlust. Most of my summers and school holidays were spent within the confines of his semi-truck cab as co-pilot/navigator. Well, mainly I kept him awake as we traveled the highways and bi-ways of the Eastern United States. I was a night owl back in the younger days. Not so much now. But whenever I have the opportunity to travel, I jump at it eagerly. Within our United States are mini cultures not to be found elsewhere. Much like other countries. Ever been to China Town in San Fransisco? I can only imagine how it resembles the homeland of China. And I loved it!
Now, I've got this chance to travel Afghanistan. And I'd like to invite you to go with me and thousands of others. How, you ask? Why, you ask?
First the how... Two Airmen journalist; Ken Raimondi and Nathan Gallahan, working for ISAF-Afghanistan will be traveling throughout the country for 30 days. You can join their page on Facebook or you can also go to the ISAF website and register there to follow them on their trip. They also have a forum to allow questions and answer sessions.
Now the why... So many of 'Our Guys' and 'Gals' have spent a good portion of their lives in the past 8 years working, fighting and paying the ultimate price with their life for our freedoms in the land called Afghanistan. There are many negative images of the country, people and the reason we're there and what we're doing. This 30 day trip being videoed by these two Airmen will perhaps give everyone who is curious and questioning a better understanding of what our soldiers see everyday. It's like taking a trip without ever leaving your home. Not quite how I like to travel, but sure beats reading the newspapers accounts and opinions.
Please join me in this trip; 30 days though Afghanistan. Who knows, we might just learn something. Today was Day 1. They started at Camp Julien. Listen along as they spoke to Major Roz Rice; chief instructor for the COIN Training Center. It's so nice to be able to put a face to name on a thank you letter for a few books sent to their new learning library.
Can't wait to see what the next month will teach me/us about a land I'll never set foot in.
And so it goes......

Calling A Spade A Spade...
~~~~~John Burroughs
I read this headline yesterday and couldn't help but shudder with revulsion. Not only for the child, especially for the child but, for the negative projection of the first lead words of that headline. U.S. soldier...
U.S. soldier ‘waterboarded his own daughter, 4, because she couldn’t recite alphabet’
Mail Online~~~~~
February 7, 2010
A U.S. soldier has been accused of ‘waterboarding’ his four-year-old daughter because she couldn’t recite the alphabet.Joshua Tabor admitted to police that he used the CIA torture technique because he was so angry.
As his daughter ’squirmed’ to get away, Tabor said he submerged her face – upwards – three or four times until the water was lapping around her forehead and jawline.
Tabor, 27, admitted to investigators that his daughter was terrified of water and he had deliberately chosen the punishment.
Here's another headline that involves a child in Hong Kong. Different circumstances and all, yet it is basically abuse. Rather, attempted murder.
Girl, 4, thrown from Hong Kong shopping mall by suicidal mother
Hong Kong - A 4-year-old girl was recovering Monday after being thrown from the seventh floor of a Hong Kong shopping mall by her mother who then jumped to her death.~~~~~
The girl's fall was broken by safety nets three floors below the interior balcony she was hurled from while her mother plunged through the nets and died on the mall's ground floor. Horrified witnesses watched as the girl clambered along the safety net past the hole her mother had fallen through before being helped to safety on a fourth-floor balcony by a shopper.
The incident took place Sunday in the Dragon shopping mall in Hong Kong's Sham Shui Po district, apparently after an argument over the girl's schooling between the woman and her husband. Witnesses saw the couple rowing outside a restaurant where they had lunch with the girl before the woman threw her daughter over the balcony and then jumped after her.
The 41-year-old mother was declared dead at the scene while the girl was shocked but otherwise unhurt. A police spokesman said the case was being treated as attempted murder-suicide. The safety nets that saved the girl's life were put in place after a 41-year-old man jumped to his death from the upper floors of the mall in 2009.
The incident is the latest in a number of murder-suicides involving children in Hong Kong in recent months.
You know, I don't care if you are a soldier, banker, candlestick maker or whatever... but when it's plain to see that a child is being abused, call it for what it is! It's CHILD ABUSE, STUPID! Don't be blaming the perp's occupation for his actions. As for the second story? Yeah, a pissed off wife and just plain crazy woman who decided to try and take her child along for her trip to hell. Thank God she wasn't successful.
Anyways...Just more evidence of the same 'ol, same 'ol media bias against the Military. Yes, I do realize that the first story I read was from Daily Mail Online which is in the UK. It gripes my derriere to know that type of bias is evidently spreading around the world. Every major news source has carried that "U.S. soldier" headline as it's top one today. Oh, if you read some of the comments on the first story, yeah... I saw a few that called a spade a spade. Everyone else wanted to blame the war and what our soldiers are forced to do and endure. Or were they blaming George W. Bush?
And for those "CIA terror techniques"? Just ask Nancy Pelosi, she's against them and doesn't know anything about 'em. Never having heard of 'google search', I'm sure.
And so it goes......
Cooking With The Wounded~ Return Trip...
~~~~~Author Unknown
Over the course of the last several weeks, I've received notice that Laughing Wolf (aka Blake Powers) has been extremely busy with the prep of organizing a return trip to Landstuhl Medical Center to cook for our Wounded Warriors. You can follow along by joining the group on Facebook: Cooking with the Wounded. You remember how he prepared for his first trip late last year, don't you?
This time around, he has much bigger aspirations. Yellow Bowl Bakery has joined forces with Laughing Wolf, and there are many other exciting plans in the works. They are working with the local media and the mil-blogs to spread the news of this venture far and wide. They are also working with several well known chefs and personalities to enlist their PR to continue and expand this well deserved honor for those men and women who have been wounded protecting us and our way of life.
As with all things that are worthy, these culinary adventures take monetary assistance. Everyone knows that there isn't any bottomless purse to dip into, well, everyone I know. Which is why every donation to the Soldiers' Angels fund for this excursion is appreciated. How better to show some lovin' for 'Our Guys' than Cooking with the Wounded? If we can't be there to do that cooking ourselves, why not send a few bucks to speed along those who can?
You will, right? And if you know any of the big self-important media types, pass this along. They might find it in their heart to become involved with those who protect all of us.
And so it goes......

Saturday Songs...

Who can resist the smokey sultry voice of Norah Jones? Each time I listen to one of her songs, I slip a bit more in awe of her and singing style. She sings the blues as well as Ray Charles. In fact, she collaborated with Ray on his last album. Methinks I shall be doing some searching the 'net soon.
Uhmmm, Lover Man...
This morning, I was introduced to Duffy. Thank you, Lori! Hope that everyone enjoys the music as much as I have today. With headphones over my ears, it almost drowns out the Disney channel da piglets are watching behind me.

Stars of Silver...
~~~~~David Lloyd George
Clicking through all the news and other items of interest, read a local headline that serves as a reminder of how 'Our Guys' think and feel about the job they have been given in the War on Terror. After reading the article, I thought the man who spoke the words was someone whom we all should know. Even better, he's a local Cincinnati man who served with the Ohio National Guard. Read on and see if you agree...
Someone had to do it, Silver Star winner says
[...]This explains why they hand out the Silver Star for bravery.Bam! The Green Beret put his boot to the door in the pit of a U-shaped mud hut in Eastern Afghanistan. Four Taliban fighters were supposed to be inside.
Instead, there were 30; all were armed.
"That's when all hell broke loose," recalled Ohio National Guard Special Forces Medical Sgt. First Class Mark Wanner, 36. The North Dakota native and former University of Cincinnati College of Medicine researcher was right behind the Green Beret who kicked in the door. They were on a 2009 mission to hunt down a Taliban commander at the end of a warm afternoon on the last day of May.
The Taliban opened fire when the door opened.
"They were waiting for us," Wanner said. "They shot at us from the doors and the windows." He and his Green Beret teammates were caught in a potentially deadly crossfire.
The GI who gave the door the boot was hit four times. Bullets hit him in the wrist, head, chest and stomach. His helmet and chest armor deflected two shots. The other two bullets did extensive damage. His wrist bone was shattered. His insides were shredded.
The wounded soldier turned to Wanner.
Before collapsing, he said two words: "Save me."
And Wanner did.
He treated wounds. He used his body as a shield. He helped carry a man taller and heavier than his five-feet, nine-inches and 170 pounds to safety. He saved a life while bullets zinged around his head and danced at his feet.For those actions under fire, Wanner will receive the Silver Star, America's third highest medal for valor.
During ceremonies Saturday in Columbus, Gov. Ted Strickland will present the medal. Wanner is the first Ohio National Guardsman to receive a Silver Star since the Korean War.
Wanner knows people will call him a hero during the ceremonies. He already has it worked out what he plans to tell them.
"I was just doing my job," he said. "Everyone on the team did his job. That's why everybody came out alive."
Then, he quietly added:
"I'd do it again today." [...]
There's one other quote SFC Wanner spoke at the end of the article that sums up what I feel so many of our men and women in the military are thinking. Click on the title link to find out what that quote is. I'd bet that a majority of y'all will agree that it's typical of 'Our Guys'.
And so it goes......
